This is a newspaper I designed for a self directed third year project where I chose PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, as my client. I created a newspaper that would be sent out quarterly every year to its members in order to keep them updated and aware of current news.
The current design PETA uses for its internal magazine is very dated and I wanted to give a new raw and fresh spin on it. With PETA being famous for its protests against animal cruetly, I wanted to take the organisations boldness and present it in a stripped down, no ‘fluffiness’ approach.
I chose to use my own hand drawn type and combine it with a structured serif font to create a high contrast between the text and imagery. The brush lettering and illustrations I created were made with ink which lends itself to different tones. This helped me succeed in reaching a rawness to the way I created my illustrations. The lettering and imagery where made to look like and relate to handmade protest signs which I thought would play in hand to the feel of PETA’s members and campaigners.
